On 24th September 2010 Ukraine signed the Protocol on the Accession to the Treaty Establishing the Energy Community. Since 1st February 2011 Ukraine has become a full-fledged member of the Energy Community. As a Contracting Party to the Energy Community Treaty Ukraine has to implement the European Union acquis in electricity, gas, environment, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.

During all this period Ukraine has actively been performing the activities on harmonising its energy legislation with requirements of the EU energy acquis:

Ensuring energy security is a key factor in building a new energy architecture of Ukraine, President Viktor Yanukovych said in his speech at “New Energy Architecture: Enabling an effective transition” session of the World Economic Forum, reports the Press office of President.

According to him, Ukraine's integration into the European energy space would contribute to strengthening energy security in the region.

It was announced by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon at the opening of the 5th World Future Energy Summit which was held from 16 to 19 January 2012 in Abu-Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).

The UN Secretary General called for stepped up action by governments, private sector and civil society to ramp up their investments into sustainable energy since 2012 was declared the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. In particular, he noted: “Across the world we see momentum building for concrete action that reduces energy poverty, catalyses sustainable economic growth, and mitigates the risk of climate change. Achieving sustainable energy for all is both feasible and necessary, and my initiative will help us meet these objectives simultaneously. It can be a triple win for all”.

This was announced by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov during the opening speech at a session of the Cabinet of Ministers on 25 January 2012, when he charged the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry and the Ministry of Economy to develop a strategic national program for energy saving and energy efficiency.

“This task is not for one year. It requires huge resources and complex and balanced management decisions. But this is reality without alternatives.

Options and phasing of new energy policy are defined and supported by the decision of the National Security and Defense Council and the President.

Dear visitors, friends! Experts of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine have provided Information on Main Indicators for Development of Energy Sector Industries of Ukraine for December and 2011 (http://mpe.kmu.gov.ua).

The document informs about dynamics and structure of electric energy generation, production, processing, transportation of energy resources, gives data on electric energy consumption, the level of settlements for consumed electric and thermal energy in particular.

13 January 2012 Energy Commissioner Oettinger spoke to Ukrainian Energy Minister Boyko regarding the ongoing discussions between Ukraine and Russia on the question of gas pricing and transit. Minister Boko reassured Commissioner Oettinger that the outcome of these discussions would ensure uninterrupted supplies of Russian gas to the EU.
